3D Prints Fast

Where can I get a STEP file 3D printed?

Quick answer

Our upload tool does not price a STEP file instantly, since it only reads STL and 3MF today. Fastest path: open the STEP file in your CAD program, export it as an STL or 3MF, then upload that for a price right away. Or drop the STEP file in anyway and use the send this file for review button, so a person looks by hand. We never guess a price for a file we have not opened.

Upload your file and get one printed for you.

Have a STEP file ready?

  1. Export it to STL or 3MF first, if you can, for the fastest path.
  2. No export handy? Send the original STEP file for review.
  3. A person opens it and replies by email.

A STEP file, ending in .step or .stp, is an engineering format. It stores exact mathematical curves and surfaces rather than the triangle mesh an STL uses, which is great for a CAD program and not something our upload tool reads today. Here is what actually happens when you have one.

The fast path: export it yourself

If you have the CAD program that made the file, this is quicker than waiting on a review. Open the STEP file, find Export or Save As in the file menu, and choose STL or 3MF as the output type. Most CAD tools, including free ones, can do this in a few clicks. Then upload that exported file here for a price the moment it finishes reading.

A STEP export usually needs one setting checked: the mesh resolution or tolerance, sometimes called chord height. A finer setting makes a smoother STL but a bigger file. The default setting in most programs is fine for a printed part.

The honest path: send it to a person

No CAD program handy, or not sure how to export? Go to our upload tool and drop the .step file in anyway. It will tell you plainly that it takes STL and 3MF files, and it gives you a button to send this file for review instead of turning you away with nothing. That puts the same file you already have in front of a person, along with any material and color you already picked.

You add your email and a short note about what you need, and that is the whole form. We reply by email once someone has actually opened your file. There is no promised reply time here, because nobody has one to promise, but the file and your setup are saved the moment you send them: you do not start over.

What to do with a STEP file, step by step

  1. Step 1

    Try exporting it first

If you have the CAD program, use Export or Save As, and choose STL or 3MF.

  2. Step 2

    Upload the exported file

Drop the new STL or 3MF into our upload tool for a price right away.

  3. Step 3

No CAD program? Upload the STEP file anyway

Drop the .step file in. The tool will say it takes STL and 3MF, with a button to send it for review.

  4. Step 4

Add your email and a note

Say what the part is and what you need. Nothing else is asked for.

  5. Step 5

Wait for a reply by email

A person opens the file and writes back with what they found, once they have actually looked at it.

Worth knowing

What we will not promise

We do not price a STEP file sight unseen, and we do not guess at a size or a cost before a person or a slicer has actually opened the geometry. Our upload tool scales a printable file up to about 8.7 inches (222 mm) on the longest side in one piece, so a large STEP part may need to be split before it can print, the same as any other format.

Can you 3D print a STEP file?
Not with an instant price, since our upload tool only prices STL and 3MF. Export the STEP file to STL or 3MF yourself for the fastest path, or send the STEP file for review and a person will look at it.
How do I convert a STEP file to STL?
Open it in the CAD program that made it and use Export or Save As, choosing STL or 3MF as the file type. Most CAD tools, free and paid, support this.
Will sending a STEP file for review cost more?
Sending a file for review does not cost anything by itself. A person tells you the price once they can see what the part actually needs.
How long does a review take?
We do not promise a reply time, since nobody owns that number yet. You get an email once a person has looked at your file.
